FAO, in collaboration with the Advisory Committee on Sustainable Forest-based Industries, the Center for International Forestry Research, Finance Alliance for Sustainable Trade, the International Tropical Timber Organization, the World Bank, and the World Wildlife Fund, is organizing a global event on the developmental benefits of sustainable wood: “Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World”. The conference will take place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 31 October to 1 November 2017.
The event will assess the benefits provided by sustainable-wood value chains and the critical role of sustainable wood products in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will discuss the sustainable forest production business model, highlighting the linkages between sustainable forest management, value chains, livelihoods, investments and financing mechanisms, as well as identify critical barriers to increasing the role of forest products in a sustainable world.
The need for stronger advocacy for the sustainable forest industry is an underlying assumption for this event. In this regard, one expected outcome from the conference is a set of agreed conclusions to feed into other policy dialogues, which will help to realize the global potential of the socio-economic benefits of sustainable wood and its contribution to the SDGs and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
